Mental health experts in Kampala are urging the government to introduce stronger counseling programs in schools following an increase in cases of stress, anxiety, and depression among students.
According to officials from the Uganda Ministry of Health, pressure from academic expectations, social media influence, and family economic struggles are contributing to emotional distress among young people.
Teachers and counselors say many students are silently battling mental health challenges, but often lack safe spaces to speak openly about their struggles. Civil society groups are now advocating for mental health education and counseling units in secondary schools to help students cope with psychological pressure.
