In Malabo, recent public attention on psychiatric care is helping to bring mental health discussions into the open.
Traditionally, mental illness in Equatorial Guinea has been heavily stigmatized, often associated with cultural or spiritual interpretations that discourage individuals from seeking professional help.
However, growing visibility—driven by public engagements and institutional attention—is beginning to challenge these perceptions.
Health advocates say that while awareness is improving, access to care remains limited, and stigma continues to prevent many from seeking treatment.
“Visibility is important,” a regional health worker said, “but it must be followed by real investment in services and education.”
