Sierra Leone’s mental health system has undergone a historic transformation. Just a few years ago, the country’s only psychiatric hospital used to restrain patients with chains — a practice deeply rooted in stigma and neglect. �
Today, with support from the government and international partners, the Sierra Leone Psychiatric Teaching Hospital has modernized care, phased out chaining, and expanded trained mental health personnel. �
This transformation marks a powerful shift from punitive treatment toward more humane, clinical care — a rare but inspiring development in West Africa’s mental health landscape.
However, challenges persist: Far outside the capital, access to professional mental health services remains limited, pushing many families to rely on traditional or spiritual healers due to cultural perceptions of mental illness. �
