In Zimbabwe, prolonged economic instability has had a profound psychological impact on the population. Daily struggles with inflation, unemployment, and migration pressures have made stress and emotional exhaustion a common reality for many households. Mental health professionals report a rise in trauma-related disorders, depression, and substance dependence, especially among youths and informal workers.
Innovative community-based responses are emerging, including peer-support groups and task-shifting models where trained lay counsellors provide basic mental health support in clinics and communities. However, the country still faces a critical shortage of psychiatrists and psychologists, leaving many mental health needs unmet, particularly in rural areas.
