In Zambia, the Ministry of Health has begun integrating mental health screening into primary healthcare services in several districts.
With support from the World Health Organization, frontline health workers are being trained to identify early symptoms of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The reform follows growing awareness of the psychological impact of economic hardship and climate-related disasters, particularly flooding that has displaced thousands of families in recent years.
Health officials say early detection at the clinic level will reduce pressure on the country’s only specialized psychiatric facility and help normalize conversations around mental health in communities where stigma remains high.
