Sierra Leone has taken a significant step toward improving mental health care with the launch of its first nationwide mental health helpline, offering free and confidential support to people experiencing psychological distress.
The toll-free helpline, introduced in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and international partners, provides counselling for individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, and suicidal thoughts. Health experts say the initiative addresses a long-standing gap in mental health support, especially for vulnerable populations.
The country continues to face mental health challenges rooted in the aftermath of civil conflict, disease outbreaks, and economic hardship. Since the helpline’s launch, officials report increased demand, highlighting the depth of unmet mental health needs nationwide.
While the initiative has been welcomed as a major breakthrough, experts stress that sustained investment in community-based mental health services and professional training is essential for long-term impact
