Namibia is stepping up efforts to tackle rising mental-health challenges and suicide rates as authorities and civil society groups push for stronger awareness campaigns and better mental-health support systems.
Experts say stigma remains one of the biggest barriers preventing people from seeking psychological help. Many individuals struggling with depression and anxiety avoid speaking openly about their experiences due to cultural and societal pressures.
In response, health authorities and advocacy organizations have begun promoting community-based mental-health programs aimed at encouraging open discussions about emotional wellbeing. Schools, churches, and youth groups are also increasingly participating in mental-health awareness initiatives.
Mental-health professionals emphasize that addressing stigma is essential for improving treatment access and saving lives. They argue that mental health must be treated with the same urgency as physical health in Namibia’s healthcare system.
