Health authorities in Dodoma have announced new efforts to expand mental health services to rural communities where access to professional care remains limited.
The Tanzania Ministry of Health says the initiative will train community health workers to identify early signs of depression, trauma, and substance-related mental health conditions.
Experts say the program is necessary because many rural residents often rely on traditional beliefs or spiritual explanations when dealing with mental health conditions. By introducing trained community counselors, officials hope to improve early diagnosis and reduce stigma surrounding mental illness.
Health advocates say the initiative could significantly improve mental health awareness and access to care in underserved communities.
