Competitive Education System”
In Cameroon, mental health professionals are raising concerns about the increasing levels of anxiety among students preparing for national examinations.
Education experts say the intense pressure to succeed academically, combined with limited counselling services in schools, has left many students emotionally overwhelmed.
“Students are expected to perform excellently, yet many schools lack trained counsellors to help them cope with stress,” said a Yaoundé-based psychologist.
Several students report experiencing sleepless nights, panic attacks, and burnout during exam periods. Despite these struggles, cultural stigma often prevents young people from speaking openly about mental health challenges.
Advocates are now calling for mental health awareness programs in schools and universities to help students develop healthier coping mechanisms.
